What this site collects, and what it doesn't
The short version: this site has no accounts, no sign-in and no forms, so it never learns your name, your file number or anything about your immigration situation. It does measure how many people visit which pages. Here is exactly what that means.
Nothing here reaches IRCC
NewcomerPath is not affiliated with the Government of Canada and has no connection to any immigration authority. Nothing you read, tick or type on this site is reported to IRCC, to a province, or to anyone else. If a government body asked us who had visited a page, we would have no way to answer. We don't hold anything that identifies you.
Your check marks stay in your browser
When you tick a step or note a date, your browser writes it to its own storage, on the device you're using. The record itself never reaches us, because there is no server here to send it to. The pages are files, not an application with a database behind it. Our analytics does count that a box was ticked or a quiz was checked, without knowing who did it or what you typed. The next section lists exactly what it sees. Clearing your browser data erases your progress, and the Erase button on the progress page does the same thing immediately.
We measure visits with Google Analytics
Every page loads Google Analytics, which tells us how many people came, which pages they read, which features they used and roughly where in the world they were. We use it to find out which parts of the site are useful and which are being ignored. It records:
- The pages you open and how long you spend on them
- An approximate location worked out from your IP address (usually the city, not the address)
- Your device, browser and language
- The site or search that sent you here, if any
- Which features get used: a step ticked, a quiz checked and its score, a chapter marked as read, never the text you type
What we never collect
There is nowhere on this site to enter any of it, so none of it exists in our records:
- Your name, email address or phone number
- Your passport, application or client identifier numbers
- Your immigration status, history or country of origin
- Any payment details (nothing on this site is for sale)
Links to other sites
Almost every page links to canada.ca or a provincial site, because those are the pages that decide the rules. Once you follow a link you're on their site under their privacy rules, not ours. Analytics counts which links get clicked, which shows us the official pages people need. What you do once you're there never reaches us.
How to opt out of the measurement
Any content blocker or privacy-focused browser will stop Google Analytics from loading, and the site works exactly the same without it, because nothing on these pages depends on it. Google also publishes a browser add-on that turns it off across every site that uses it. In a private or incognito window, your check marks disappear as soon as you close it.
If this changes
This page describes the site as it is today, not as it might be. If we ever add anything that collects more than the above, this page changes on the same day, and the date below changes with it.
